I stopped by ‘Bonjour, Jacob’ the other week, a cute and miniscule coffee shop in the 6th arrondissement known for its curated display of magazines, and I was immediately drawn to the vibrant covers of FARE magazine. Now, I know I am a sucker for a great travel mag, but I am currently obsessed with FARE. It is a bi-annual publication with 16 issues, and I picked up the latest issue which focuses on Taipei. Each issue spotlights a specific city and the editors work with a collection of local contributors to create the art, photography, and articles showcased in each issue. I was initially drawn to the Taipei issue because of its cover photo, so lush and green, of a tea farm in the mountains. I didn’t know much about Taipei at the time of picking up the magazine, and although I would have said I was interested in visiting Taiwan, I wasn’t particularly drawn to the place. Now however, still only in the middle of the mag, Taipei is high on my list of places to go! The articles are such a beautiful mix of personal stories, city history, and snapshots of different neighborhoods or aspects of Taipei that have painted the most beautiful pictures in my mind!

Not only that, but the graphic design of the magazine itself is stunning. The photography spreads are dreamy,  and all the stories come with curated art work, plus pages and fonts in different colours that work together to draw me into a new world entirely. The experience of reading FARE is truly like taking un voyage – which is the mark of an excellent travel mag. The shape of the magazine also lends itself to a lovely reading experience. It is bigger than a typical pocket book but still fits comfortably in the hands, with a flexible binding that allows easy page flipping and appreciation of the double page spreads. The thickness of the magazine lends a pleasant heaviness to handling it and adds to the sensation of delving into an actual book. Finally, I will end with some appreciation for the font size. Niche I know, but important! The font size, which varies across the articles, is nevertheless slightly larger than what is found in most books and traditional magazines, and honestly it just makes it that much easier and enjoyable (for me) to read!
